A Gentleman's Duel

I chose two films that are about guys who want the girl. The first film is a wonderful little story called”Gary”. This film is about a young boy who is in love with the older girl. The other film is a funny short called “The Gentleman’s Duel”. This is a story of two men who fight for the love of a woman. However, these films are polar opposites when it comes to style.

“Gary” is a rough gritty low budget French student film by 4 people. It has a great stylistic look to the film that sends you on a journey into the mind of a 10 year old boy. This film is in French but they do a great job of getting you to feel those goofy day dream visions of a child who wants to be the hero and win the girl no matter how ridiculous the scenario or whatever the language.

The other film is a highly polished film by Blur Studios done buy a team of nearly 80. Blur studios is a big player in the animation world. This film is near Pixar quality in animation and in story. They create a simple world of two gentlemen trying to court a rich beautiful woman. Then the story spins into a fantastically hilarious world of where the gentleman dueling with giant steam driven robotic battle suits.

These two films have a lot in common. They each tell a simple story of guys wanting a woman and willing to fight for her love. They each invoke emotions that we can relate to no matter what fantastic element is happening. Fighting for another’s affection is at the heart of what it is to be a man. An overcoming all odds to make it happen is what makes a good story that we all can relate to.
I would invite you to take the time to watch the simple home pc feel of “Gary” and the Pixaresque vision of Blur studios “The Gentleman’s Duel”. Each short is enjoyable and worth your time to watch.
